Kids Rock Event at the P.F. Chang's Rock 'n' Roll Marathon
January 17, 2009

Of the 3000 participants in this year's Kids Rock event, nearly 1000 were KSS kids and parents! In this exciting mile-long event, kids had the opportunity to experience the elation of participating in a major running event where family, friends, and spectators came to show their support! Through the KSS program at their school, the children walk or jog an entire marathon (26.2 miles) one mile at a time, tracking their daily progress. The Kids Rock event marked the culmination of their efforts as they finished the last mile of their own "marathon".

In a state where on in five children is considered overweight, KSS is making a difference! "It's an inspirational and positive program," says Susan Bookspan, coordinator of the central Phoenix program. "Kids and their parents learn the skills to help them move towards a healthier future. The program provides the support they need to implement positive changes that will hopefully last a lifetime."

January 12, 2008 Kids Race in Marathon

Over 500 Kids from KSS Programs Finish Race
January 12, 2008
KIDS SPORTS STARS from the Creighton School District ran in the kids race portion of the Phoenix Rock and Roll Marathon.

KidsEarly on January 12, 2008, over 500 kids from the Creighton School District competed with hundreds of other kids in the Kids Race as part of the Rock and Roll Marathon held in downtown Phoenix. Each year since 2004 several hundred kids, from the 3rd through 6th grades in the Creighton Schools, run in the race to celebrate the completion of the fall portion of their Kids Sports Stars marathon program called Kids Rock. Most of these kids During the program at the schools, 74% of the kids completed the 26 miles of walking and running prior to January 12!

Each school had a differenct colored T-shirt for their kids so that the schools stood out as kids ran with teachers and parents. Families and friends were there to cheer them on and to watch each finisher receive a medal for completion. Healthy snacks and booths about healthy eating and exercise were also part of the day. It was heartwarming to see the joy in the kids’ faces. Kids of every race and ethnic background competed together. This year handicapped and developmentally challenges kids participated in much larger numbers than ever before.

This year the Kids Race was held day prior to the main Rock and Roll Marathon race which is on Sunday. The Saturday kids race gave more focus on the kids and made attending and participating much easier. As always, the folks from Phoenix Childrens Hospital did a marvelous job of organizing the event.

These kids really ROCK!
